It is important for expatriates to have flexibility built in to any insurance plan.  Many offer the ability to increase or reduce the amount of cover and to adjust the frequency of payments.

Life insurance gives your family peace of mind and financial security.  It pays out a lump sum in the event of your death.  Cover is available on a term basis or a whole-of-life basis.

Critical illness cover provides a lump sum if you are permanently and totally disabled, or if you are diagnosed with a specified serious illness.

Income protection gives you an income if you are unable to work.  To keep premiums low, this is normally after a deferred period of time, but this period can be varied.

Expat medical and health insurance does not need to be expensive, but it is necessary.  How much insurance you need depends on where you live.  If you live in a developed country, you may have excellent cover and only want to protect yourself against major medical problems.  Elsewhere, you may want cover for the smallest medical problem, with extra cover for such things as medical evacuation.
